Working Horses at Loggerheads

Working Horses at Loggerheads

The traditional practice of using working horses to extract timber will be on show at Loggerheads Country Park on Thursday 24th August. Kevin Taylor from Shire X Horse Logging will be bringing his 15-year-old Gypsy Cob – Bill to move some timber. Kev has been working with Bill for 11 years and the pair have a very close bond.

Using horses is an efficient and low-impact way to move the timber especially where vehicular access is an issue. The trees were felled as part of the ash dieback tree safety work. Some of the timber will be milled into benches to be used around the park.

At the risk of information overload, if anyone is interested in Kev – he completed a 3 year apprenticeship with the British Horse Loggers after a 22 year career as a technician in the RAF.
