Hillfort: Moel y Gaer Llantysilio

Hillfort: Moel y Gaer Llantysilio

Moel y Gaer Llantysilio sits on a low summit between the peaks of Moel Gamelin and Moel Morfydd on the Llantysylio Mountains.

It’s the smallest and simplest of our hillforts with a single rampart enclosing an area of just one hectare and with one inturned entranceway.

This hillfort may be small but the enclosure commands magnificent views over the River Dee, the River Alyn and the surrounding valleys.

There has been no past excavation of the site but in 2007 Engineering Archaeology Services (EAS) carried out a topographical survey which found 11 possible hut platforms inside the hillfort.

How to get there
You can leave your car opposite Capel Hebron in Rhewl on the B5103 between Pentrefelin (on the A542 Horseshoe Pass road, near Llangollen) and Glyndyfrdwy in the Dee Valley.
